A Dunedin man was arrested last week on charges of sexual battery on a minor. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office alleges that a 15-year-old girl was in the care of the 32-year-old man when he engaged in sexual activity with her on at least two occasions. The teen apparently told an adult what happened, who reported it to the sheriff’s office. The man is charged with one count of sexual battery and one count of lewd and lascivious molestation. He was booked into the Pinellas County jail. Anyone can be accused of a sex crime. Once you have been accused, police will investigate and usually make an arrest. Had Hillary Clinton won, there would be cries, no sad tears, no editorial. But disingenuous motives don’t change the merit of the argument. By overwhelming majorities, Americans would prefer to elect the president by direct popular vote, not filtered through the antiquated mechanism of the Electoral College. They understand, on a gut level, the basic fairness of awarding the nation’s highest office on the same basis as every other elected office — to the person who gets the most votes. In part one of our post, we posited that a good judge needs 15 years of legal experience, ten of which are spent in courtrooms as a PD or ASA. Once the judge has the experience, we move on to the issue of character. Character counts for the judiciary. It's easy to do the popular thing. It's much tougher to do the right thing.Lawyers and the judiciary are viewed through by the public through a media and pop-culture lens of unrealistic results. Movies and TV shows portray the justice system as an over-worked bureaucracy where high-paid lawyers routinely get evidence suppressed and cases dismissed based on technicalities like finding that a defendant's middle name in a document in a murder case was spelled wrong. Which naturally frees them from the constraints of facts and reason, an enviable position to be sure. Conviction rates for sexual assault against women are shockingly low, to the extent that, even in a developed nation such as the United Kingdom, only 6 per cent of rape allegations result in a conviction, a far lower rate than for any other violent crime. As The Guardian columnist Julia Bindel puts it, ‘rape might as well be legal’. What are the chances you might actually click on the 6% link? The writers must be betting slim, since it kinda makes them look idiotic. Of those cases that completed to the point of guilty or acquittal at the magistrates’ court or Crown Court in 2011, just under two thirds were convicted. Minnesota Joining National Movement To Reduce Solitary Confinement
Minnesota’s prison system will partner with the Vera Institute for Justice in 2017 to look into alternative forms of punishment in hopes of moving away from a system that relies on solitary confinement as a punishment for difficult inmates. The Vera Institute for Justice is a national criminal justice reform group that wants to help abolish the practice of solitary confinement across the United States. They have selected the Minnesota Department of Corrections to take part in a 21-month program designed to work with prison administrators to discover and introduce alternatives to long-term isolation.
