The Collapsing Souffle' of the Sessions Allegations

I have not commented on the allegations that Attorney General Sessions had illicit contacts with the Russians, and lied about it during his confirmation hearings, because I have been around this town long enough (more than 40 years) to spot a politically-inspired concoction when I see one.  The idea that Sessions is or was a Russian collaborator  --  in essence, a double agent who had been brilliantly impersonating a wahoo Alabama conservative all these years  --  is hilarious, although probably not as hilarious as the idea that he's smooth-talking con man.  It now turns out (and it didn't take that long) that the whole thing was  --  how shall I say this?  --  fake news. Vanity Fair, not known as a mouthpiece of the Republican Party, looks in detail at the allegations against Sessions and concludes:As things clear up, we may be seeing a collapsing soufflé. And as with so many soufflés served up by the…

New Miami Criticized for Filing Another(!) Appeal in Speed Camera Case

The village of New Miami continues to fight to avoid having to repay motorists fined under its unconstitutional speed camera scheme.  And motorists who expect refunds are getting fed up. The News Journal reports that the Village has filed an appeal after a judge ruled that $3 million should be returned to drivers caught by speed cameras later deemed unconstitutional. The newspaper interviewed a motorists who paid fines under the unconstitutional ordinance: Shirley Walker and her husband, David, like to go to Jungle Jim’s in Fairfield so they usually travel from their home in Eaton down U.S. 127 through New Miami to get there. Walker says her husband got caught by the old cameras two or three times and dutifully paid the $95 ticket each time. She says they “hate” the speed traps and find it frustrating the case — that has been traveling around the Butler County and state appellate courts since 2013 — will be delayed even more. …

Three Strikes in Las Vegas

0
0
Many states and the federal government have instituted a so-called “three-strikes” law. Nevada’s version of this is its “habitual criminal” law under NRS 207.010. Essentially, this law says that anyone who receives a third felony conviction could receive a life sentence in prison. When so much is at stake, it is imperative that the defendant have an experienced Las Vegas three strikes attorney fighting for them. Through their efforts, it may be possible to have the charges reduced or dropped, thereby avoiding a life sentence. NRS 207.010 treats a third felony conviction as though it is a separate crime. The law further divides repeat offenders into three classes: habitual criminals, habitual felons and habitual fraudulent felons. Prosecutors most often seek charges for habitual criminals because their offenses do not have to include the most serious, violent crimes. Charges for being a habitual felon may be pursued under NRS 207.012 if the…

Boston Man Arrested on Ninth Drinking and Driving Charge

According to the Boston Globe, a man from Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (OUI), and this was allegedly his ninth drunk driving offense. Authorities say the man was 61-years-old at the time of his arrest, which occurred on Route 2 in Boston. A spokesperson for the Massachusetts State Police has said this defendant had eight previous convictions for drunk driving.  This is certainly more than one would expect considering a defendant such as this will have multiple concurrent suspensions on his or driver’s license. This defendant did in fact have a suspended license and was charged with operating on a suspended license (OAS), operating under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs, driving with an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, driving with a child safety seat not properly fastened (indicating there was allegedly a young child in the car at the time of his arrest),…

Just Because Your Paranoid . . .

That was quite a tweetstorm last night, even by Trump standards.  He went after the Terminator again, trashing Arnold Schwarzenegger for leaving the Apprentice, claiming he didn't leave voluntarily but was fired for "his bad (pathetic) ratings."   Oh, and he also had a few choice words for Barack Obama -- accusing him of tapping Trump's phones during the "sacred election process."   Ah yes, that sacred election process.  Trump claimed this was something he "just found out" --  purportedly from a Briebart news article -- and that Obama was a "bad (or sick) guy," a nefarious combination of Nixon and McCarthy.  But, don't worry, Trump assured us:  "nothing found" -- even though Trump could not possibly know that.Given the shady collection of characters with substantial ties to Russia inhabiting Trump Tower, it shouldn't be at all…

Blaming the victim on insurance mandates

0

Some debates over bad ideas never seem to die.A Texas House Insurance Committee meeting Monday will feature a bill (HB 178) which would require impoundment of uninsured vehicles involved in accidents. This bill isn't as problematic as its near cousins filed in recent sessions to impound any uninsured car, but it's a step in that direction. The problem comes because SOOO many Texas drivers can't afford insurance. The number used to be one in four drivers were uninsured. After a decade of intense efforts to drive that ratio down, it's now one in seven. But that's still a whopping 2.5 million people driving without insurance. Moreover, in a real sense the economy depends on them doing so to get to work, to shop, to get their kids to school. The state has zero interest in all that activity grinding to a halt.As it does with immigration and so many other situations, Texas keeps unreasonable laws on the books then pretends to enforce them in narrow circumstances…
