William Harrison, a 31-year-old convicted burglar, recently pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal sexual conduct, armed robbery, and home invasion according to a news report at CBS Detroit. The alleged rape and robbery occurred in 2011, and involved an 80-year-old woman who was allegedly attacked in Clinton Township at the Heritage Estates senior citizens' complex where she lived.
News reports state that Harrison pleaded guilty to the charges one day prior to his scheduled trial. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 1. Michael L. Steinberg, Harrison's defense lawyer, and a Circuit Court judge agreed on sentencing of between 20 and 48 years in prison.
According to police, the defendant entered the woman's apartment through an unlocked window; the crime occurred at around 11:15 p.m. as the woman was sleeping. The woman testified in court that Harrison said his daughter had been kidnapped, and that he needed ransom money. She alleged that Harrison locked her in the bathroom after ordering her to open a safe in a closet, where she had stored personal documents, pain medications, and jewelry. The woman (who was not named) then claimed that Harrison ordered her back into the bedroom, where he raped her as she screamed for him to take her belongings and leave.
News reports indicate that Harrison has an extensive criminal record and was on probation in two different courts when he was arrested for this incident; no prior arrests involve assault, however.
First-degree criminal sexual conduct is an extremely serious charge, as all Michigan sex crime attorneys know. Individuals who are convicted may spend up to life in prison; obtaining positive results requires the skill and experienced of a talented lawyer. A conviction can ruin a person's life, not only in terms of losing his or her freedom, but being labeled as a sex offender forever.
