Just being charged with a sex crime can cause real harm not only to the reputation of the person who has been arrested, but also to their careers, finances, family life, and personal and professional relationships. (We’ve discussed this in a prior post.) Charges aren’t convictions. Innocent people get arrested. It’s very sad to consider how someone who isn’t found guilty of a sex crime, particularly one involving children, can still suffer real harm just because the allegation was made. NBA’s Alvin Robertson Cleared of Child Sex Charges This Week: Allegations Based Upon a Lie Let’s watch what happens in Alvin Robertson’s life in the next few months. Why? After a six year battle, ex-professional NBA player Alvin Robertson, formerly of the San Antonio Spurs, has been cleared of all charges of child sex crimes. He faced very serious allegations. Study Finds 300 Active ISIS Supporters in the US:  A study released Tuesday reveals that approximately 300 American or U.S.-based Islamic State (ISIS) sympathizers have been identified as active online recruiters for the terror group.  Fox News reports that the study, titled "ISIS in America: From Retweets to Raqqa" and conducted by George Washington University's Program on Extremism, found that recruiters primarily use Twitter to convince others to travel to Iraq or Syria to join ISIS, saying that about 250 Americans had traveled or attempted to travel to the Middle East.  The study also concluded that, since March 2014, 71 people had been charged in the U.S. with ISIS-related activities, 56 of which occurred this year alone.  There are currently 900 active investigations against ISIS sympathizers in all 50 states. Members of a specialized narcotics team operating in Alabama have been accused of planting drugs and weapons on innocent young black men in a series of wide-ranging abuses spanning nearly two decades, an article in the Henry County Report has revealed. According to documents obtained by the Alabama Justice Project, up to 12 officers working in the Dothan Police Department’s narcotics squad reportedly participated in the scheme—which began in 1996—and specifically targeted young black men. Most of the young men were subsequently prosecuted and imprisoned, with some still incarcerated.  Moreover, the findings indicate that the initial results of an internal investigation into the abuses were suppressed by ranking officers among the police department’s leadership, including former Police Chief John White, current Police Chief Steve Parrish, then-Sgt. Andy Hughes, who is now the assistant director of Homeland Security for the State of Alabama, as well…

Research published in the Journal of Criminal Justice suggests that courts tend to go easier on women compared to men in some aspects of criminal proceedings. For their study, researchers decided to take a broader look at gender disparities in the criminal justice system. A team of four researchers explored two key aspects of criminal trial hearings – judgments made at the initial hearing and during the sentencing process. Previous studies had examined single aspects of the criminal trial, but no study had looked at gender disparities at both stages simultaneously. Researchers analyzed more than 3,500 felony cases referred after 2009 in the United States. Gender Bias Findings After analyzing the data, researchers uncovered: Women were less likely to be detained before trail than men. They were 46 percent less likely to be held in jail prior to trial. Women released on bond were given lower bond amounts. Their bond amounts were set 54 percent lower on average…

On October 16, 2015, Irwin Schiff died, in prison, from lung cancer. He was 87 years old, and serving a fourteen-year sentence – his third prison term, and the final chapter in his 40-year crusade against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Schiff was one of the original and most notable proponents of constitutional challenges to income taxation – as he saw it, and relentlessly argued it, there was no basis in the United States Constitution for the assessment or collection of income taxes from anyone. In a series of widely-sold books, Schiff argued that no one was required to file income tax, and anyone filing their taxes should claim zero income. Government prosecutors called this tax fraud and tax evasion, and sent him and many of his followers to prison. Schiff and those followers called their actions “tax honesty” and continued to fight. Many citizens who both respect the law and who believed in Schiff, and still believe in him, have been…
