Anti-#GamerGate Becomes a Cybersquatting Movement

In a predictable pattern, those who oppose free speech and ethics in journalism have resorted to more unethical tactics. Because I support free speech and GamerGate, I've endured several months of harassment. In their latest move, anti-#GamerGate advocate Chris Kluwe became a cyber-squatter.    Why will no media outlet will discuss the harassment I've received? At this point I can't even keep track of the harassment I've faced. Yet the harassment I've received is different from what others claim to receive. My attackers are not anonymous. They flout the law and common decency in public. After I expressed my free speech rights under the Constitution, violating no laws, the following has occurred: Zoe Quinn posted my home address as well as pictures of my home to members of a Something Awful board called Helldump. Helldump was a SWATting and doxing board on Something Awful, and Quinn was a member. Zoe Quinn lied about me in front of…

Freddie Gray’s Bad Arrest And Still Dead

Maryland State Attorney Marilyn Mosby seems to have acted with extraordinary speed in charging six Baltimore cops with the murder of Freddie Gray, but then, it’s only due to the comparison to the lengthy delays we’ve come to expect in every other case. These are the cops charged: Officer Caesar Goodson, Lt. Brian Rice, Sgt. Alicia White, Officer Garrett Miller, Officer William Porter, and Officer Edward Nero. Five months after the death of Tamir Rice, we’re still awaiting the end of the “investigation,” even though there was nothing to investigate.  In contrast to killers without shields, it’s no big deal.  But then, they’re no big deal, and have no union president to threaten the prosecutor’s husband. In addition to charges of murder, there is a charge that will evoke a deeper sadness. false imprisonment.  What distinguishes this charge is that it reflects the allegation that the arrest was baseless.…

The Random Asshole Dilemma

On a Finnair flight from Helsinki to Rome, I held a business class ticket which was purchased from American Airlines, with this leg of the flight being on a “partner” airline.  Despite the flight being more than three hours, it didn’t actually have any business class, and so I received coach class seating and service. Not to make a big deal of it, but the cost for business class is substantially greater than coach.  It wasn’t that the flight didn’t get me to Rome. It did. It wasn’t that flying coach was horrible. It wasn’t. It was that I paid for business class and didn’t get it. So American Airlines and I had a chat, to the extent one can have a chat with an Airline, and, after going back and forth a few times via their online communication mechanism, the finally reached their conclusion: We have your money, you’re screwed.  By the end, they gave up trying to explain why, because they had no reason…

Who Are the Baltimore Six?

The Washington Post has a rundown of the six officers charged in Baltimore in the Freddie Gray case.  Only one, an African American named Ceasar R. Goodson, Jr., is charged with homicide.  Goodson was the driver of the police van in which Gray apparently sustained the injuries that killed him.  The Post reports:He is charged with second-degree depraved-heart murder, a charge used when a suspect is accused of reckless disregard for another person's life, in addition to involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault, manslaughter by vehicle and misconduct in office.WBAL-TV in Baltimore reported last week that Goodson is facing internal disciplinary proceedings in a separate case for allegedly allowing a prisoner to escape from a hospital.Goodson is the grandson of a police officer, according to the obituary for his mother, who died in Baltimore in 2012. He lives in Catonsville in Baltimore County, where two of his neighbors said Friday that he had…

A non-comprehensive survey of good crimjust bills still moving

It's May of an odd numbered year which means wheat and chaff are separating when it comes to criminal-justice reform legislation from Texas' 84th session. It's now possible to see much more clearly which stand-alone bills still have a chance to pass. (N.b., where nothing has changed from last week's assessment I haven't updated all of those bills.) Anything, of course, can be revived as an amendment if germane to another bill's caption, so Grits won't speculate on what bills appear dead. Instead, let's focus on reform bills still living. Here's a non-comprehensive survey of good bills still moving. The last day for the full Texas House to consider House bills on second reading is May 12 and the bills languishing in the Calendars Committee waiting for a floor vote is stacking up. Let's start by looking at a few bills that need a timely House floor vote:Warrants for cell-phone location data (HB 2263): In 2013, this legislation was…

SUPREME COURT ADDRESSES USE OF DRUG DOGS AT TRAFFIC STOPS

If a police officer stops you for a minor traffic violation, how long should the officer be permitted to detain you? Suppose the officer issues you a ticket or a warning for the minor traffic violation and then says he wants you to wait while he has a drug dog sniff your car? What do you say? If you say no, can the officer do it anyway? These are the questions answered by the United States Supreme Court in the recent case of Rodriguez v. United States. Rodriguez was driving on a Nebraska road when he was stopped by Officer Struble for drifting onto the shoulder of the road for a couple seconds. Officer Struble checked the driver’s license of Rodriguez, then checked the driver’s license of his passenger, then issued a warning for the minor traffic offense. After issuing the warning, Officer Struble asked Rodriguez for permission to walk the police dog around the vehicle. Rodriguez declined. This is no police drug dog, it’s my dog Rex. He could be a police…

Raise-the-Age Shenanigans

WTF?Texas' much-ballyhooed raise-the-age legislation - HB 1205 by Dutton increasing the age of adult criminal culpability in Texas from 17 to 18 - passed unanimously out of the House Juvenile Justice and Family Matters Committee on April 8th. But, as of today, with just ten days left until the House can no longer consider House bills, the committee report still hasn't made its way to the Calendars Committee, which sets bills on the agenda for a vote by the full House.Grits cannot recall in my experience a committee report ever taking longer to get from the originating committee to Calendars after a positive vote. Usually, a week is considered a long time. More than that and in my experience somebody is f%^#ing with you. But who? It's the committee chairman's bill! Grits' sources tell me the delays stem from Legislative Council's apparent inability to compile a valid bill analysis, which hardly seems credible. Yes, they're understaffed, but…

The state of Georgia is exceptionally proud to be the home for hundreds of thousands of U.S. military veterans and active duty servicemen and women. In addition to the current military population, many more Georgian residents are planning on enlisting in one of the branches of the U.S. armed forces in order to serve and protect our country.
